Walter De Maria

Lighting Field, 1971-77

The Lightning Field (1977) is a Land Art work in Catron County, New Mexico, by sculptor Walter De Maria. It consists of 400 stainless steel poles with solid, pointed tips, arranged in a rectangular 1 mile × 1 kilometer grid array.

This Land Art is maintained by Dia. You are able to rent a space in the cabin and stay there overnight. Hopefully, I can make a visit to this exhibit once I move to AZ.

Richard Serra

If you liked the work of Richard Serra, here are a few more of hist pieces. They are all very large and have that rust patina to them. He has pieces all over the world.

The Privet by John Chamberlain

The Privet was the only work I found interesting at the Dia Beacon. Chamberlain had other works on display, but they appeared to be nothing more than just twisted metal. I find it to be a work of art. It's colorful and original.

Andy Warhol

Andy warhol was considered the master of pop art. we saw some of his work at the dia. He had a thing with cows. and displayed larg serigraphs and held exhibits with wall paper of cows.

Man Ray

This is a 1958 replica of a lost 1921 original. It is a painted flatiron with tacks. This was at the moma. and was part of the dada movement.

Ad Reinhardt

This is an abastract painting. "No 5" 1962. It is increasingly reductive and symmetrical . This painting has an underlying grid of different couured squares divided by a green central horizontal band. i like it because it is simple and some people would probably pay alot of money for it.

Georgia O'Keeffe

Below are some works by Georgia O'Keeffe. I like her use of colors in all of her paintings. I remember studying her from high school in art class and wanting to see more of her works. Below are some that I found that I enjoyed.

This painting was at the Moma. The artist is Barnett Newman "Vir Heroicius Sublimis" who lived from 1905-1970. the medium is oil on canvas and it is considered Abstract.

Blinky Palermo@DIA Beacon

I didn't get anything out of this piece. It's titled:"To the People of New York City' by Blinky Palermo. It was his last work before he died. It's a 15 part work comprising 39 individual paintings. I just wanted to post and see if anyone else remembers seeing this work.

This is Red Balloon by Paul Klee, 1922. I like the use of bright colors but a darker shade of them. I would like to have this painting in my office for when I am distressed I could look at it and get away. It is easy to imagine a hot air balloon ride for a escape from reality.

DIA: Chelsea

I went to the DIA website and wanted to find more about the other gallery located in the city in Chelsea. Apparently they are closed due to them trying to find a new location Below are some past exhibitions held there.

Alfred Jenson: Concordance

Panamarenko: Orbit

Bridget Riley: Reconnaissance

Francis Bacon : Painting 1946

I saw this painting at the MOMA. Like many other works of art, you need to see it up close in order to really get the feel of it. The colors here do not do it justice. I remember thinking "Wow, This guy is really twisted." Then we saw his movie. This was his first work that displayed flesh, and it wouldn't be the last. "This guy was really twisted." But the work is good!

Jackson Pollock

Before I do any more posts I want to comment on the Pollock movie. I have viewed five movies dealing with painters. I have come to the conclusion that MOST famous painters have serious personal issues. Frida Kahlo I found to be the exception to the rule. Her problems started with her accident no fault of her own, she moved on with her painting and life with Rivera. I wasn't sure what Pollock's issues stemmed from. It was obvious he had a drinking problem, maybe an inferiority complex, or he was a manic depressive and no respect for his wife, Lee. I'm glad her works sold after Pollock passed on.

Andy Warhol and Bach

I was not very impressed with Warhol's work at the Dia so I looked up some more of his works. I thought that he had done a work where he had imagined himself and Bach the musician together lol, but it was another artist. Still pretty dark, but a lot more interesting then the Dia's representations.

Map of broken glass

In the movies we have seen it appears as if the artist just grabs a brush and stares at the canvas then BANG masterpiece. Well it would appear sometimes there is a method to their madness. Here is the design plans for the Map of Broken Glass exhibit we saw this weekend.

Maman

Many of you may have seen the Spider looking cage exhibit at the Dia:Beacon. Maman by Louise Bourgeois is located outside in The National Gallery in Ottawa, Canada. I like the enormous size of the sculpture and uniqueness in being a spider.

I don't get it

We went to another museum and again I don't get it. Maybe I'm not as enlighten as others but I do what to understand..I want to feel something when I look at a piece of art. I favor Degas, yes I love what he did with the ballerinas, but nothing that is what I see when I go to these museums. People will look at a piece of blue-green glass and sit there as if if there lives depends on looking at this piece of plastic. To take a piece or pieces of leather and put them into a museum and then have people look at it...i just want that...not that's its not art. Who am I to what art is or what it is not but (I'm screaming right know) a piece of white canvas painted on it is the color white and all the other paintings are white. Are these artist or are these artist just making a fool of us

A lesson in death

It seems to me that all the artist that have a movie made after them seem toreted. This is true for Mr. Becaon but he also uses people as well. He had a lover who gave me motivation to paint..or at least the ideas about what to paint about But in the process he destroys him. To use someone just for your job to hurt them is not right. His art work is disturbing at first, but when you see his life it almost beautiful. He was so self center that the only way to tell his partner that he loved him was to paint him. Yeah and keep him druged up and cheat on him..but that's besides the point. When you date an artist i guess one had to understand that they communicate in there own way. A singer might sing the way he feels for his other a painter will paint and that's what Mr. Beacon did.

Previous post

Sorry about the picture covering the post, it did not preview that way. The pictures are of Him, his wife and his work.

Jackson Pollack

I just wanted to display what Jackson Pollack and his wife looked like in real life. I also am posting one of his works. It was a tragic end to a troubled life. The movie shows us how fame can destroy you if you are not strong.

DADADADADADAI just love saying it DADADADADA ok Jackson Pollock ok I understand some of his art Square Composition with a Horse it looks like there was some thought in to it then there are the others Autumn Rhythm.. I just don;t get. I remember seeing his artwork in the MOMA and looking like hum ok and then reading and seeing the artwork in the text I'm still at a lost of word. I am by no far a judge of art and what is good and what is not. But like the DADA which was the unart how can we tell if an artist is just laughing at us or that he or she is trying to share there world.

MoMA

I know I missed out on the field trip to the MoMA so I thought I would post a few Pieces of art that I found on the MoMA website that I enjoyed.

Edward Hopper 1925 House by the Railroad

Robert Delaunay 1913 Stimultaneous Contrasts: Sun and Moon

Rene Margritte 1927 The Menaced Assassin

Green

Hello everyone,
OK what is art and who makes art ART Last weekend our class took a trip to the MOMA and there where some thing that just left me saying hum EX a painting of green with a target on it, that's it, it was just blue, Ex a bike and a shovel that's it I could name 100 more things that just left me puzzled. I'm sure it appeals to someone or it would be in the MOMA but you see that everyday. But this one person took it and made it ART..Ok so someone please answer this question who make art ART?
takes it and makes it into ART. But this is just my thoughts on it please don't take any offence to it, but answer my question who says that art is ART

Georges Seurat's The Channel at Gravelines, Evening

I saw this piece at the MOMA. It was amazing. First; it was done with pointilism. Second, how he captured the the shadows and evening sky and light. The only way to appreciate art, is to see the real thing upclose.

Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso the man

Violen and Guitar

His art seems to lean to the dark side and death at times then vibrant fractured colors at others very interesting.

Spartans at the Gates of Fire

I have added a picture of a painting of the Spartans at Thermopylae. The artist has diffidently placed some personal interpretation into the painting. Was wondering what style everyone thinks it is.

Vincent and Theo

Thanks for your responses and attention during our first class today. I still found the movie heartfelt and poignant. I liked the way the director cut back and forth from the lives of the two brothers, whose life was so closely intertwined yet geographically separate. I also believe some movies are better not seen in the mass audience realm, where critics and "experts" may diminish its intent and power.

modern art blog

This blog was created as an experiment in addressing new means of communicating ideas, thoughts and expressions relating to our discussions, readings and research. We will be using this new media to instantly relay these concepts and see where this may lead by the end of our experiences enjoying modern art.
